Rwandese delegation’s exchange visit in Rome within bilateral cooperation IMELS-Rwanda

The Africa Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development to host Rwandese delegation at its premises on December 11th and 12th, within the bilateral cooperation between the Italian Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Environment of Rwanda.

Following the fruitful visits in Bologna (April 2019) and Maccarese (September 2019), the project “Sustainable Urban Wetlands Development within Kigali City”, financed by the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) under the cooperation activity of IMELS with Rwanda, proceeds with the third and last study visit in Rome organized by the Africa Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development (ACSD) at its premises.

The Sustainable Urban Wetlands Development project aims to build a resilient city through the rehabilitation of degraded urban wetlands in Kigali, highly valued for their enormously important environmental and economic functions such as storing and releasing water, flood control, improving water quality. Drawing from good practices of environmental management, the capital will not only be able to deliver basic services but it will turn into a safe, resilient and environmentally friendly city.

In recent years Rwanda has achieved significant socio-economic development. Nevertheless, growth far from only benefiting the country, is placing increased pressure on an already strained natural environment. For this reason, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been recognized as a fundamental tool to contribute in the prevention and control of impacts caused by social and economic expansion and to ensure the sustainability of any development project.

The visit will gather nine Government Officials and technicians from relevant Rwandese institutions, among which the Rwanda Association of Professional Environment Practitioners (RAPEP), to strengthen their technical skills through exposure to innovative and modern methods of EIA discipline. Specific focus will be given to areas of qualitative and quantitative impact assessment, public participation, expert consultation and socio-economic analysis providing broader and higher level knowledge on EIA and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).
