400 Youth to be Empowered to Combat Climate Change in Gasabo

By Isabella Elisabeth Iradukunda

The world is currently facing the challenges of climate change, and Rwanda is taking proactive measures to address this issue. The Rwanda Climate Change and Development Network (RCCDN) has launched a project in collaboration with GIZ Rwanda to train youth in schools and churches on climate change. This initiative aims to empower young people, as they are considered the strength of the country.

Mugabo John, who heads the project at RCCDN, announced on Friday, May 31, 2024, that they have begun training youth representatives and teachers in the Gasabo District. He emphasized the importance of focusing on youth, as they are the future of Rwanda and can play a crucial role in developing strategies to tackle climate change.

According to Mugabo John, “We are training the youth because they are the backbone of the country. They represent the future of Rwanda. By equipping them with knowledge about climate change, we believe they can take proactive measures to address this global issue.”

Iyamuremye Alexandre, Representative of the National Youth Council in the Kacyiru Sector and a volunteer in Gasabo District, highlighted the impact of human activities on climate change. He mentioned that prior to the training, many were unaware of the causes of climate change, such as smokes, industrial emissions, and unsustainable agricultural practices. However, through education and awareness, youth can contribute to preserving the environment and protecting the ecosystem.

In addition to Gasabo District, the project aims to train 400 youths in Bugesera District as well. The ultimate goal is to empower a total of 800 young people across both districts to become advocates for climate action. Through education and training, these youths will be equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to combat climate change and safeguard the environment for future generations.
